Blog #2: Got a Second? Learn About Second Sundays!

Plant with sign for Second Sundays

Visiting Williamsburg, Virginia for a long weekend?  If you’re planning to leave the area to head back home on a Sunday, you could be missing out on a Williamsburg tradition that we Art Life locals look forward to each month.  I’m talking about the Second Sundays monthly street festival, presented by LoveLight Placemaking.

Second Sundays are a regular fixture from Prince George’s Street to North Boundary Street (surrounding Merchants Square) for ten months out of the year.  On the second Sunday of each month from March through December, local artists, craftspeople, farmers, entertainers and food trucks set up from 11-5, and it’s a blast.  Family-friendly?  Check.  Supportive of local artisans?  Check.  Local musicians and other entertainment acts?  Check and check.  And with its proximity to Colonial Williamsburg, it’s easy to make a day of the festivities.

My husband and I braved the heat this past Sunday to attend.  It wasn’t so bad in the morning, and we had to keep up our track record of not missing a Second Sunday yet this year.  Besides, we were out of some of our favorite foodstuffs that we always find there.  Mornings aren’t the same without my small batch Haitian Blue organic beans from Williamsburg’s Longneck Coffee Roasters.  We’ve also developed a fondness for Lavender Box Bakery’s low sugar homemade jams.

And although there are plenty of beautiful jewelry options throughout the fair, I’m partial to local jeweler Ryan Eure’s designs.  Ryan and Cait also run the Downtown Gallery (attached to their store), where you can find my greeting cards for sale!

So if you’re planning a visit to the Historic Triangle area, try to aim for the second Sunday of the  month for a festive shop local experience that you won’t soon forget.
